Deep Thoughts by Michael Finley

Earlier this week, my manager took me and my team out to a swanky restaurant in Dallas called N9NE. It's one of those places where people are more than happy to pay for overly priced food because for some reason they think it's the place to be seen - which means that me and my Docker pants and plaid button-up shirt stood out like a dork at a supermodel convention!

Apparently it's also a great place to take in a basketball game because Michael Finley and Juwan Howard came in to eat dinner in the bar while watching the LA Lakers-Houston Rockets game on TV.

(Finley, who is now with the San Antonio Spurs, was in town to play the Mavericks the following evening - he and Howard used to be teammates here in Dallas.)

I could see them from where I was sitting and all through my dinner all I could think was, "Don't they get sick and tired of watching and playing basketball all the time."

Later when we were leaving, I suddenly found myself walking out along side Michael Finley - I couldn't resist:

Me: "Hey Mike, don't you get tired of watching basketball all the time?"

Mike: "No man! I love it!"

Me: "But as long as you have been around the game, wouldn't you want to get away from it all during an off-night?"

Mike: "What do you do for a living?"

Me: "I sell pharmaceuticals."

Mike: "Well, when you get home from work do you ever look up the stock price of your company or think about your job?"

Me: "Sure, but there comes a point when I don't want to think about it anymore."

Mike: "Well, when you do what you love it never feels like work."

Me: " . . . . . . . . cool, man!"

Dirk who?

Just sitting here thinking of words that adequately describe what I feel this morning as a Dallas Maverick fan . . .

Disappointed, bewildered, dispondent, flabbergasted, dumbfounded, frustrated, disillusioned, stupified, humiliated, demoralized, stunned, dejected, shellacked, astounded, infuriated, miffed, vexed, irked, embittered, calloused, dispirited, heavyhearted, chagrined, peeved, woebegoned, rueful, crestfallen, languished, dismayed, disenchanted

. . . and at the same time completely numb!

Also, it's sad how this post I wrote last year after the Finals debacle still applies today . . .

Here we go again!

The Dallas Maverick season opener is tonight. And we all know what that means!

It’s a brand new season of crazy dancing and courtside over-reactions from everybody’s favorite NBA Team Owner Mark Cuban!

Who needs Emmitt Smith and Dancing With the Stars when you’ve got Dirk Nowitzki drowning 3’s and Mark Cuban perfecting the Elaine Benes dance move all in one camera shot!?! It’s fun for the whole family, folks!

It may not get you a NBA Championship but it sure will leave you thinking, “I wish I was a billionaire basketball dork, too!”

Here’s a clip of Cuban firing off one of his classic hot sports opinions on . . . The Wiggles?

No wonder we lost 4 straight to Miami!

Maverick fans sing "Everybody hurts!"

Following the NBA Finals debacle in which the Dallas Mavericks hand delivered a gifted wrapped championship to the Miami Heat, I received this email from someone who feels my pain . . .

I just thought I would let you know that I am contemplating selling all I have, moving to a far, far away land where no sportscenter and highlight clips can haunt my dreams. If I don't see you again for many, many years, know that I am probably in a remote village in Africa that lacks cable television.
In mourning,
Bert

I replied to Bert by asking if there was room for two.
