Gaylord Texan not "Tate-Friendly" *

I spent most of last week at our national sales meeting which was held right here at The Gaylord Texan Resort.

During the meeting, I had the great idea of showing off Tate to the rest of my team during dinner - what else would you expect from a proud daddy?

So as soon as the meetings for the day were finished I rushed home, grabbed Tate and caught up with everyone at the Glass Cactus - a restaurant/club on hotel property.

I wasn't there 2 minutes when security tapped me on the shoulder and said, "Sorry, sir, but you have to be 21 years or older to be in here."

I started to laugh! I turned 31 last year, buddy! Suddenly, I realized he was referring to Tate!

I tried to explain that since this was a private party (my company rented out the entire place) nobody would mind.

"Sorry, sir, hotel policy. You gotta be 21 or over."

Had I not been there on company time I probably would have fired back with some immature and sarcastic remark that would included the phrase 'give me break, man!' But since my Vice President of Sales was standing less than 10 feet away, I figured I'd just smile and leave without remark.

As I was being escorted out the door by security, a teammate asked if I was coming back.

"I don't think I have any business being in an establishment that won't allow my 2-month old son to stay for dinner."

So much for leaving without remark. The security guard gave me a look like, "Man, I don't make the rules around here."

I don't bring this up just so I can complain that The Gaylord Texan is some terrible place. (Behold! The den of Satan!)*

They have a right to do business how they see fit. (I hope they go bankrupt in a week!)*

I'm sure many families have stayed at The Gaylord Texan and had a great time. (Booking a room at the Gaylord Texan is un-American and will only encourage the terrorists!)*

I mention this because I was surprised how personal I took it. If the hotel didn't want Tate to be there then I didn't want to be at the hotel! Eventhough Tate is barely 2 months old and slept through the entire incident I couldn't help but feel sorry for him - as if he had gotten his feelings hurt!

Weird, huh?

The night ended on a good note, however. Tate and I grabbed some Chick-Fil-A and we went home to watch the Mavericks in HD - the highlight of the evening was Tate falling asleep on my shoulder.

I wonder if he thought someone would slip some beer into Tate's bottle? I understand following the rules, but come on!

I bet you had more fun with Tate at home than at any old stinky grownup party. :-)

Poor Tate! I am going to sit right down and right a letter-NO ONE and I mean NO ONE treats Tate like that! Poor little guy-he just wanted to be loved by his daddy's work and what happens? He gets kicked to the curb! Tate, life is tough-don't let the system get you down!

It is so true that since they can't get offended themselves you get offended for them huh? My kids don't know to be mad when someone says something a little off but I sure do!

Hey Jenni,

Yeah, it's all fun and games until you are not even 3 months old and you get kicked out of your first club for being underage!!

And if Tate is anything like me, he won't be able to 'hold his liquer' - a little beer in his bottle would have caused quite the hang-over!

Hey Suz,

I guess Tate learned that not everybody likes to make googly-faces and talk to him in baby voices!

What a cruel world!

Hey Keri,

I'm sure you're always emphathetic (or is it 'sympathetic'?) as a parent.

I hope I get a little better at it though. I don't want to be the crazy parent who goes off on a coach because his son didn't get to play in a game.

But at the same time, our children are an extension of ourselves and it's hard not to take things personally. I can already see myself wanting to stand up for my child.

Which will no doubt end up in me appearing on the news in some home video showing me attacking an unsuspecting coach in a parking lot!!

Can't wait!

Thanks all for stopping by,

Don't feel bad about taking it personally. If someone doesn't smile when they look at one of my sons, I contemplate following them home.

Hey Blair,

Good to know that I'm not the only one!

And thanks for the heads-up! I'll be sure to give your boys high-5's the next time I see them!

That is one of the dumbest rules I have ever heard.

I definitely know that feeling of feeling sorry for your child because someone says something rude to them or shuns them in some way. I actually recorded one such incident in Jackson's life on my blog where a woman in Target essentially said Jackson wasn't cute (but not outright). It's not like Jackson even understood what was going on, but I was still really sad for him and kind of mad on his behalf. I wouldn't have gone back either, and even though I am sure the Gaylord Texan is a wonderful place, your experience with Tate does make me think twice about going there since we really don't leave the boy behind very often!

that is ridiculous...I want to write more but my child is pulling drawers out of the dresser...gotta go...

Hey Kate,

Jackson's a very cute kid! What a blind old bat that woman must have been!

I was just telling someone else that some people lack too much common decency to participate in human dialogue! It should be mandatory for their mouths to be covered with duct tape!

Apparently, if we don't feel sorry for our own children then nobody else will!

Mavericks AND your baby boy in full snuggle mode? I'm no expert yet, but that seems like a pretty good trade off to me. Those kinds of parties are just awkward schmooz-fests anyway.
'Course, I never did like to schmooz...
