25 Random Things

For those of you on Facebook, you've seen this going around and know what's about.

For those of you not on Facebook, I got tagged to list 25 random things about myself.

1. Even though Dr. Pepper is the preferred “drink of the gods”, I haven’t had a sip of the sweet nectar of life (or any other carbonated drink) in over 10 months!

2. And because of that I now weigh less than 180 lbs – which is a first for me in I don’t know how long!

3. 177 lbs is the lightest I’ve ever weighed at the beginning of cycling season – time to break my personal record for top speed! (Which is over 40 mph! Downhill, wind at my back, peloton of 25 cyclists, and adrenaline rush off the scale! Shhhh, don’t tell Kelly!)

4. I can’t wait for cycling season to start!

5. I rank restaurants solely by how good their bread is . . . and if they have good desserts.

6. My favorite restaurant bread used to be Harrigan’s cheese rolls. Now, it’s Babe’s Chicken hot biscuits with honey!

7. My favorite restaurant dessert is Truluck’s Chocolate Malt Cake & Ice Cream! Kelly and I always share one between the two of us. But no matter how much we eat, we can rarely ever finish it!

8. My favorite activity to do with Tate is to take him to Krispy Kremes on Sunday mornings – we don’t talk much because we’re too busy stuffing our faces!

9. My favorite activity to do with Kelly is to have a nice long conversation over dinner in a great restaurant . . . sans child!

10. 6 of my first 10 random things have all mentioned food – I guess I’m hungry!

11. I don’t want to talk about the Cowboys so it’s probably best you don’t bring them up.

12. . . . those bunch of no-good, gutless loafers!

13. I seriously hope President Obama will be as successful as everyone thinks he will be.

14. I seriously hope I am as successful at my new job as everyone thinks I will be.

15. Speaking of my new job, I’ve been praying for wisdom a lot lately . . . a whole lotta prayin’ for a whole lotta wisdom!

16. I wish I could set aside an hour every morning to do nothing but read. I’m able to read for about 30 minutes at work before the day gets started but it’s not as much as I want. And I can’t read at night because it puts me to sleep.

17. I always get bit by the snow skiing bug this time of year – Man, I wanna hit the slopes!

18. I need to finish defensive driving before sometime in March or else a judge in the City of Fort Worth will be none too happy with me!

19. Kelly and I have already decided that we will go see U2 if they come to town on tour after releasing their new album this spring – Man, I hope they come to town!

20. I always have a pen in my hand when Rick Atchley speaks because he always says something I want to remember.

21. Even though I consider myself quite the “techie junkie” (Did I mention that I just switched out Kelly’s laptop memory card all by myself?), I still can’t figure out how to work the thermostats in our house . . . and we have lived here for over 5 years!

22. Now that I have a desk job where I work alongside other people, the biggest challenge I have encountered thus far has been “thermostat wars”. It’s me, 14 women and one thermostat. Needless to say, it always feels a skosh warmer than I’d prefer.

23. I’ve always thought that Marble Slab Ice Cream was decidedly better than Cold Stone Creamery but neither are as good as Milwaukee Joe’s Ice Cream. (Blue Bell doesn’t count because it’s store bought ice cream!)

24. Duhon reminded me of this one: When Tate was born, Kelly went out and got a really frilly diaper bag that I was afraid could be mistaken for a purse on days when I had Tate by myself. So I went out and bought a diaper bag that looks more like a testosterone-packed messenger bag so people wouldn't think I was carrying a “man-purse”. I still use my DiaperDude even though Tate has pretty much grown out of the diaper bag phase.

25. One of my worst OCD tendencies is the one where I can’t fall asleep if the sheets and covers on the bed aren’t properly tucked in. I’d explain what I mean by “properly tucked in” but this post is long enough already as it is. But let’s just say that I have been known to momentarily kick Kelly out of bed as late as 11:30 at night just so that I can properly tuck in the sheets.

Alright then . . . tag, you're it!

Tagged Again . . .

Keri again tagged me with a '7 random things you didn't know about me' post.

It took me while to come up with 7 things most people don't already know. I may have to throw out some really weird, dark stuff that quite frankly might scare the begeebers out of the blogosphere!

But, for Kelly's sake, I promise to keep it within a PG-13 rating!

Here we go:

1. I don't hunt. Not that I'm apposed to hunting, I just can't ever pull the trigger on anything because I start having "Bambi" flashbacks.

You remember the scene where Bambi's mom gets whacked by a trigger-happy, NRA-lovin', red-blooded American leaving Bambi to grow up in a single-parent home with a reluctant and confusing father?

Yeah, that scene is pretty much on auto-replay every time I line up any living creature in my sights!

(I bet you didn't realize Walt Disney movies had such complicated plots, did you?)

2. The "little life irritation" that has gotten the best of me lately has been when waiters/waitresses say, "Careful! Hot plate!", and then place it down right in front of Tate!

I was a waiter, too, once upon a time! And I can attest that the concept of not placing anything in front of a toddler is a quite simple one to grasp . . . at least for some people!

3. How is it that every year at about this time there are gorgeous wild flowers along the side of the highway yet there are ugly weeds in my flower beds?!?

The random factoid about me is that I actually enjoy mowing and edging my yard but it's the planting of flowers that will eventually be over run by weeds that makes me want to smack Adam and Eve around for eating that stinkin' apple - but I digress since I've already stood on that soap box!

4. I love when I get to go a long time without shaving - like leading up to the Cal bowl game during New Year's break in this past January. It's not that I really like the "scruffy" look (though Kelly thinks it's crazy sexy!), it's just that I hate shaving!

And I don't want to hear it from those of you of the female persuasion who think you've got it worse! Shaving your legs and arm pits is NOTHING like scraping a blade over half your face and neck every morning!

And when you think about it, men taunt death every time we shave because there are far more vital arteries around the face then there are in the arm pit!

Let's see you nick your carotid artery and then have to scramble around to see how many tiny pieces of toilet paper it takes to plug up that bad boy before passing out from a loss of blood!

5. None of my pants fit me now that I've stopped drinking carbonated drinks.

I won't go into much detail here since Kelly seems to be a little bitter about the fact that I've lost weight simply by cutting out cokes. I guess she thinks I should have to go on some ultra-regimented detox diet before I'm allowed to shed a few lbs!

I keep telling her that I will gladly increase my intake of Blue Bell & Magic Shell if it makes her feel better!

6.If someone asks me if I play golf I'll tell them ""Heck No!" despite that fact that I practically grew up on a golf course and played on my high school team.

Having said that, I'll gladly accept anytime my dad offers to pay my green's fee at Teeth of the Dog Golf Course in the Dominican Republic - considered one of the Top 40 courses in the world.

(Side note #1: This golf course is appropriately named!)

(Side note #2: Wearing black shoes with shorts when your legs haven't seen the light of day all spring will make them look even more white and pasty than they already are!)

7.Here's one of my favorite things to do with Tate.

Thanks for the tag, Keri!

I wonder what Audra and Helen will write!

5 Things You Didn't Know About Me . . .

Trey tagged me with 5 things you didn't know about me . . .

1. I cried at the end of The Green Mile. Well, it's probably more accurate to say that I got misty-eyed - although I don't think either sound very masculine.

I don't know why that movie got to me. I saw it by myself when Kelly was out of town so maybe I was already emotional because was I missing her (brownie points!).

It was pretty pathetic how I was wiping my eyes when the lights came up and blaming it on "my darn contacts" to the people next to me!

2. Although I didn't cry, I felt really bad when I accidentally killed our goldfish a few years ago. We had a counter top aquarium with about 3 or 4 fish. We had the fish for several months and I was doing a good job changing out their water and keeping their tank clean.

Unfortunately, I must have put some bad water in their tank one day because the very next morning I came downstairs to find Nemo and his family belly up.

I felt guilty all week about killing those fish! I kept thinking, "I killed God's creations!!" I think most of it was not knowing exactly what went wrong. Maybe I overfed them or perhaps they got SARS.

Regardless, I felt so bad I didn't buy any more fish. I went to the store but couldn't help imagining all the fish screaming in terror that they would have to go home with me!

3. I'm legally deaf and blind.

I've always been extremely hard of hearing because I have a "desensitized right inner ear". Essentially, the inner workings of my right ear never fully developed so I was born with poor hearing. I started wearing a hearing aid in college when audiologists were finally able to make a hearing aid that would actually help thanks to digital technology.

As for being blind, I had 20/20 vision until the 4th Grade when I shot myself in the eye with a BB gun (insert "You'll shoot your eye out!" line from The Christmas Story here).

The long story short was that I was shooting at a coffee can in my backyard when the BB ricocheted off the can and hit my bottom eye lid - had it hit my eye directly it would have ruptured my eyeball!

My eye was swollen shut for 3 days and I've had to wear extremely powerful corrective lenses ever since - without them I'm literally blind as a bat!

4. As an outward cry for attention, as well as an act of rebellion against my parents, I grew out my hair during my sophomore year in high school. My bangs touched my chin! Thank goodness there's no photographic evidence of my most awkward teen-aged phase.

5. Another act of rebellion was me insisting that I ride a Honda 100cc motorcycle for a year after I turned 15. It was actually a lot of fun. Naturally though, I thought of myself as being much cooler than I actually was.

Thanks for the tag, Trey!

Now I'll tag . . .

Kelly because, as my wife, she always seems to have stuff for me to do.

Get Off My Lawn! because he tagged me not too long ago.

Audra because I know she'll play along.

EDMC because whatever she writes will inevitably make me laugh.

And Keri because I want to know if she's still alive!!!!!!!

Tagged . . .

I've been tagged again . . .

This time it's by Get Off My Lawn! - a blog I tripped over not too long ago. I found Lawn (as I'll call him) immediately endearing as we have both learned to embraced the grumpy old men within. Take a moment to stop by and even say hello. But consider yourself warned - I don't think he likes it when people walk on his lawn!

(Love that blog title, by the way!)

Now, on with the meme. Here are the rules:

1) Post a note about a blogger you would like to see something wonderful happen for. Maybe one whose posts have touched your heart in one way or another. Include details as to why you admire them and what you wish for them. Be as supporting and affirming as you can.

2) Post your favorite memory around selflessness, giving, or doing for others. Something that has actually changed you.

3) As a postscript, name one thing you will actually do for someone in your life before December 31 that is born out of joy.

4) Tag 3 other bloggers who will play the game and find the spirit. Don't forget to leave a comment on their blog so they continue to share the good feelings.

Sounds easy enough, right?

1. Helen - If you don't read her blog then you should. And if you do read her blog then you know that she is definitely deserving of something wonderful to happen in her life! She's had a rough go at it lately and could probably use a little encouragement. Hang in there, Helen!

Blessed Assurances - Another blog that should be on your radar screen. Susan (a crazy high school friend of mine who knows too many of my crazy high school stories!) and her husband Jeff are hoping for a little wonderful bundle of joy. I desperately hope that for them as do so many others! Hopefully this will be their last Christmas as just Susan & Jeff!

The A-Team - Want a good reason why Jody & Janell deserve something wonderful to happen? They're raising twins! And if you've ever googled 'raising twins' then you'll know that it ain't easy! But despite all the challenges they face (most of which strike the fear of God in me!), both Jody & Janell come off like pro's - although more like exhausted pro's! All the more reason why I wish something wonderful for them!

2. I once pulled over to help 2 old ladies whose car had broken down out in the middle of nowhere (between Comanche and Brownwood, Texas) during a hot Texas summer. Since I have the mechanical IQ of a dead hamster and didn't have a clue how to fix their car, I instead used my friendliest, most-trustworthy smile to offer to drive them to a relative's house 45 minutes away. I could tell they were a bit leery of me at first but they accepted my offer.

During the drive, I talked non-stop about my then-pregnant wife and my small group in hopes of reassuring them that they didn't have anything to worry about. I don't know why I did that other than maybe then they wouldn't think I was some psycho serial killer . . . because we all know that psycho serial killers don't have pregnant wives and don't go to weekly bible studies.

Apparently it worked because they both fell asleep in my car! No joke! Think about it - 2 old women who spent 2 hours in the heat and then sit in an air-conditioned car with some babbling idiot who won't shut up about his church and family . . . I'd act like I fell asleep, too!

I actually felt bad when I had to wake them up once we got to Stephenville because I didn't know where their relative's house was.

Once we got there, they were sweet and offered to pay me for my inconvenience. I declined and drove away just happy that I was able to help.

3. I know I need to do something for Kelly. She works hard everyday with Tate and never complains! I'll think of something good and then share it later.

4. I'll tag Jennifer because she tagged me not too long ago . . .

. . . Chris & Sarah because I've never tagged them before and I'm curious if they'll do it . . .

. . . and Wendy because maybe then she'll throw in more pictures of Casen just for the heck of it - and you can never go wrong with more Casen pictures!

Thanks for the tag, Lawn!

Jennifer got me with a 12 Random Things About Christmas meme . . .

1. Have I ever mentioned that it bugs me when stores play Christmas music before Thanksgiving? It also bugs me how commercialized Christmas has become. I recently tripped over a new blog that covered this topic very well!

2. That being said, I usually get hit with the Christmas fever around the 20th or so - at which point I'm having a holly, jolly Christmas . . . and a happy new year!

3. My favorite Christmas present growing up: Bonkers - my half-golden retreiver, half-cocker spaniel that I loved dearly for nearly 10 years. We named him Bonkers because he could have benefitted from a daily dose of Ritalin.

4. (Spoiler Alert!) I remember when I realized that there was no Santa. Some kid at school was going around the playground breaking the bad news to everyone. It didn't bother me because I never really believed in Santa in the first place. I just remember thinking, "Of course Santa's not real - no real person would come through the chimney!"

5. Although I knew there really wasn't a Santa, I always allowed myself to have fun imagining that he was real.

6. Although I love living in Texas, I still get a little bummed every year we don't have a white Christmas.

7. My parents have a great tradition of giving "Spirit of Christmas" gifts on Christmas Eve. They aren't gifts on our wish list but rather gifts my parents want give us - hence the name "Spirit of Christmas". I always got bummed as a little kid when I'd open it up and it would be a book, a framed picture of our family or some other kind of momento. But as an adult, it's one of my favorite gifts.

8. My "Spirit of Christmas" disappointment was always short lived because of the great stockings gifts we got on Christmas morning. Stockings are a big deal in my family - and still are with Kelly and I. We got cassette tapes, VHS movies, toys, etc. And each gift was individually wrapped.

9. There was always something magical about running to our living room and seeing the Christmas tree surrounded by all the presents including the 'big one' from Santa. Half of me wanted to just stand there and stare in awe . . . the other half wanted to rip everything open - truly one of the greatest moments in a kid's life!

10. The worst Christmas present I've given Kelly: A heating pad to use when she had cramps! This was back in Year 1 or 2 - I was actually using my active listening skills because she had kept saying how she wished she had a good heating pad. Although it wasn't the main gift I gave her that year, the look on her face when she opened it let me know that my active listening skills weren't as finely tuned as I thought!

11. The best Christmas present I've given Kelly (so far!): I had her wedding ring updated!

12. Usually the song Twelve Days of Christmas makes me want to shove fists full of tinsel in my ears. But I've been known to stop and listen (and giggle!) if it's being sung by the greatness of John Denver and The Muppets!

Thanks for the tag, Jennifer!

I'll tag Kelly so she'll have a chance to complain about having to wrap each stocking gift individually . . .

. . . Keri because she'll be "none too happy!" . . .

. . . Audra because it's time for her to update her blog . . .

. . . and EDMC because she tagged me a couple weeks ago!

Here are the rules:

1. List 12 random things about yourself that have to do with Christmas.

2. Please refer to it as a 'hoopla' and not the dreaded 'm'-word.

(Whoops! I think I broke this rule!)

3. You have to specifically tag people when you're done. None of this "if you're reading this, consider yourself tagged" stuff is allowed...then nobody ends up actually doing it. The number of people who you tag is really up to you -- but the more, the merrier to get this 'hoopla' circulating through the blogosphere.

4. Please try and do it as quickly as possible. The Christmas season will be over before we know it and I'd like to get as many people involved as possible.

EDMC tapped me on the shoulder with a meme. This one you take the first letters of your middle name and find adjectives starting with the same letter that describe you.

Yet another fine example of how simplicity sometimes can go hand-in-hand with higher degrees of difficulty.

Witty - Although not near as witty as I would like to think of myself to be, I love to make Kelly and Tate laugh - so therein lies the reason for my constant search of the next punchline . . . or barf sound, depending upon my audience.

(By the way, this little exercise has brought to my attention the disturbing shortage of adjectives beginning with the letter 'w'. I had to choose between witty, wacky, womanly, weak, and whimsical. So yeah, I'm witty.)

Axiomatic - Kelly says she can read me like a book. There's a part of me that wishes I could be an unpredictable enigma. But I think part of human nature is the need to feel known and understood - and that would be me!

Debonair - Let me guess, now you're thinking I'm delusional, right?

Eclectic - Which is what Kelly's calls my music collection on my iPod. Hey, I can't help it if I have a refined, albeit deaf, ear.

Thanks, EDMC! Let's give Keri, Tara and Audra a try.

8 Randoms

Kelly tagged me.

Making a list of 8 random things about myself isn't too hard to do. It's making a list of 8 random things about myself that I'm not too embarrassed to tell the blog world about that's proving to be a bit difficult!

1. Just Say No to Radio Ads - I won't listen to radio ads. They're annoying - especially after the 4,132nd time! Such noise pollution! It drives Kelly crazy how I will turn down the volume during commercial breaks. Ultimately, I'd rather sit in complete silence than listen to another over-the-top car dealership ad that ends with a 30-second legal disclaimer at 400 words a minute!

2. Restaurant Karma - Thanks to my one-sided hearing I must have first dibs on where to sit at a restaurant table. I keep telling Kelly it's for her own good. If my one good ear is facing towards the noisy kitchen then she'll spend the entire meal repeating herself.

3. Clutter Kills - If I have an OCD tendency on anything then it's with clutter. I hate clutter! There are times when I can no longer stand the clutter and go on a cleaning/re-organizing spree. When I do, watch out! If something hasn't been used in the last 3 months and it's not in its proper place then there's a good chance it'll end up in the dumpster!

No kidding! I once threw away a perfectly good coffee maker because we hadn't used it once during the 4 years it sat in our kitchen and it was cluttering up our kitchen counter.

(Kelly made me go buy a new one!)

4. Don't Call Me Picky! - I am more than capable and willing to eat almost anything. But I choose to be selective on what makes my menu of acceptable food units. Despite being called strictly a "meat and potatoes" kind of guy (which is a great meal, by the way), I do find opportunities to stretch my culinary horizons from time to time.

Even today I tried a crab cake wrap for the first time. I may have to move that one up to the top of my rotation - quite delish! But just because I may pass on your grandmother's spinach casserole doesn't mean I don't have a refined pallet! I'm just being a little selective!

5. Not Worth Seeing TV - Aside from major sporting events, The Colbert Report, The Office and an occasional news broadcast, I don't watch TV. (1) I don't have the time. (2) There is a decreasing amount of quality programming that's even worth watching. Just because reality TV is popular, it doesn't mean it's any good! (3) Watching TV takes away too much time from blogging!

6. Coverage Denied - That's what I'm eventually going to hear from my medical insurance company if I keep injuring myself. In the last 8 years I have:

- Hyper-extended my knee playing softball.

- Sprained my ankle who-knows-how-many times playing softball.

- Suffered a head injury while playing basketball and was hospitalized for 2 days.

- Sustained another head injury a month later by a silver platter-wielding waitress and had to go back to the ER.

- Consequently suffered dreadful migraines as a result of my head injuries. I hate migraines!

- Ridden in an ambulance to Dallas Baylor ER after my cycling accident - no hospital stay, whew!

- Nearly sliced my finger off - which is healing nicely, by the way!

7. Clearing The Mind At 20 mph - One of the reasons I enjoy cycling is because for at least 2 hours at a time I don't think about anything but the 50 feet of pavement directly ahead of me - which, in a weird way, is actually quite refreshing. It's when I stop thinking about the 50 feet of pavement when I land in the ER!

8. "Be good!" - I don't know when or where I picked up this phrase but I say it in place of "Good-bye", "Have a good day", "See you later", etc. I actually get some pretty funny responses from people ranging anywhere from "What?" to "Why would I want to do that?"

After reading my list I'm sure you've added me to your prayer list! Kelly says thank you! Let's see if we need to add The Swan, Wendy or Laura to our prayer lists, too!

Tagged . . . First & Last

My wife tagged me. So here it goes:

First memory: My mom used to be an interior decorator and would take me along on her "house calls." One house had a bear skin rug on the floor . . . with bear head (and teeth) still attached! It's so unfortunate that one of my earliest memories as a 4-year old is of me being deathly afraid of a rug.

Side note: This memory has transitioned into an adulthood post traumatic disorder as a general fear of all large teeth-bearing animals.

First real kiss: JoAnn - 6th Grade. She had to ask me twice before I could muster up the courage. I remember thinking afterwards, "Man, I hope she doesn't ask me to do that again."

First concert: Soul Lift at Six Flags - Jr. High. Another sad example of my overly sheltered and repressed childhood.

First love: Blue Bell & Magic Shell. No, seriously!

First crush: Lisa - 5th Grade. We even "went" together for a while until she broke up with me just after Valentine's Day - ouch!

First thing you think in the morning: Please, Tate - just 10 more minutes!

First book you remember loving: Escape From Warsaw by Ian Serrailler - 6th Grade. This book planted the seeds to my lifelong fascination with World War II. It's a true story about 3 kids who escape German occupation in Poland to reunite with their family in Switzerland.

First pet: Bonkers - An appropriately named golden retriever mix that could have benefited from a daily dose of Ritalin.

First question you'll ask in Heaven: "Can we watch the history of the world on TiVo?"

First thing you think of when you hear the word 'vacation':

(As the trailer says, "When you think vacation, think National Lampoon's Vacation")

First best friend: Dirk - 2nd Grade. He had all the cool Transformers.

Last time you dressed up: Excluding my suit and tie for work . . . I can't remember.

Last thing you ate: Oven Baked Potato Wedges with Olive Oil, Rosemary and Garlic! Mmmmm! They make the house smell yummy!

Last CD you bought: Thanks to iTunes I haven't bought a CD in quite a while - I only buy singles now. But the last full CD I bought off of iTunes was the soundtrack to Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World. Great movie. Even better soundtrack.

Last (good) book you read: I'll insert the word "good" and go with Lee Strobel's Case for Faith

Last time you cried: When I held Tate for the first time.

Last time you told someone you loved them: A few minutes ago when Kelly and Tate left to run errands.

Last really funny thing you did: I'll change this to the last funny thing my dad did: For Father's Day last weekend we went to my parents' and grilled hamburgers. After a few bites of his burger my dad said, "Is there something wrong with this cheese?" That's when he realized that he was trying to eat his cheeseburger with the plastic wrapper still on the cheese!

Last thing you watched on TV: Comedy Central's The Colbert Report. Kinda sad how this is how I get all my news now!

Last Halloween costume: I can't remember my last costume so I'll tell you about my favorite costume. Batman - Age 4'ish. My mom made it herself - including the cape and cowl! But don't think that just because it was homemade it was some dorky looking costume. My Mom is pretty impressive with a sewing machine. In fact, some people thought I was the real Batman!

Last concert attended: Celine Dion in Vegas . . . but only to prove my everlasting love and devotion to my wife!

I tag Tara because I can only imagine what her responses will be; Russ because he needs a break from his dissertation work; and Keri because despite recently learning 100 random things about her the blogosphere still wants more!

Tagged . . .

When Laura got tagged she forgot to tag someone else. So, being the helpful friend that I am, I said, "Aren't you supposed to tag someone else?" She said, "Oh yeah! Tag, you're it!"

(Note to self: Cut back on being so helpful!) Just kidding, Laura!
