QOTW: The Super Bowl

This article about the NFL barring an Indianapolis church from having their Super Bowl Party sparked quite a debate among the leadership at my church. We were worried that we may be breaking the law with our own Sunday night activity.

Since we didn't advertise our event (especially using the name "Super Bowl") nor did we charge for admission (why would a church charge for admission in the first place??), we felt like we were in the clear to 'party on'!

We actually called our party "Soup-er Bowl Party" and tied in a canned soup drive as a service project - for every can of soup you brought you got your name thrown into a drawing for door prizes. Of course, the cans went to the local food bank.

So c'mon and complain, NFL! We can use the publicity!!

A couple of thoughts on this year's Super Bowl:

1. Am I the only one who was completely disappointed the commercials?

2. For once, I actually enjoyed the Halftime Show. Did anyone see the irony of Prince singing Purple Rain in the rain?

3. If you want to sound like the sports-brain at work then casually mention that both the Super Bowl and the NCAA National Championship this year had a touchdown scored on the opening kick-off by the team that would ultimately lose the game.

4. Too bad HDTV doesn't do anything about foggy, rain-soaked camera shots.

5. Abilene, TX in da' house!

6. I wonder if winning Super Bowl MVP will make Peyton Manning any less of a cry baby? Na, probably not!

7. The best part about the Pre- and Post-Game Shows was that I didn't watch them.

Yeah, the commercials were quite dissapointing...except for the Letterman/Oprah one. Oh my goodness I was rolling on the floor laughing!!! I'm a big Letterman fan and he and Oprah have this ongoing feud. Since Dave's from Indiana and Oprah's from Chicago, it was hilarious to see them in their Jersey's, arm in arm, watching the game calling each other "honey"!!! LOOOOVED IT!

Hey Laura,

The Letterman-Oprah commercial was definitely clever. I doubt anyone was expecting those 2 in the same commerical.

But that's what was missing with most of the commercials - none of them seemed really, really clever.

Budweiser had it's annual slew of funny commercials, but still none of them will be remembered next month.

Oh well, you can out-do last year every year.

Well, since I am in "the biz," I have to comment.

Actually, the creativity of the SB commercials have been going down for the past 2-3 years. The last really good ones were the Dot Com ones! However, since I am an officer in the American Advertising Federation and particularly enjoy mentoring our college chapters, I gotta pull for the Lay's commercial with the guy driving the car and being distracted by the girl. That commercial (everyone's heard this all day) cost them all of $12 to produce and, it was pretty clever...even though very simple. (My husband doesn't agree...but he's a Lance/Tom guy so what does he know?!) Anyway, I agree about the promos for Letterman/Oprah though! It's still my favorite part of the SB because I like to see "what's happening."

Hey B-Mom,

Seth Godin has good comments on the SB ads.

(sethgodin.typepad.com)

He says that SB commercials have evolved beyond trying to sell a product/service to trying create buzz that spreads into something much bigger than a product or service.

Thanks for stopping by,

If you really wanted to sound like a sports brain, you could reference that ALL the losing Super Bowl teams that have played in Joe Robbe/Dolphin stadium have had a kickoff run back for a touchdown. As referenced by your leader, the Sturminator.

Wade said...

Why am I not surprised that the sports brain himself would come up with a stat like that?

By the way, Bob Sturm is NOT my leader - especially after he called me long-winded, thus making himself a sports hypocrite! It takes that man 5 minutes to ask what time it is!

Thanks for stopping by,

The guy in the next cubicle over.

I thought it was great for Peyton to win the SuperBowl.

To watch him actually lose his mind on the field during the AFC championship game against the Patriots, recapture his composure, then will his team to victory from a 21 to 3 deficit... wow. Against the Patriots and Tom Brady? WOW!

As for the SuperBowl, I liked the Letterman-Oprah commercial and, can't really remember any of the others.

Prince was great. That was the first SuperBowl halftime show I've ever watched.

And I did catch that ACU was in the house in Miami.

How did Prince not look soaking wet on-camera during the halftime show?? It was raining the whole time! I expected him to be wearing tons of makeup, figured it would run... and just be an all around disaster for Prince's PR comeback.

How does that much electric stuff get used outside in the rain, without any sort of malfunction, glitch, or calamity occuring? I kept waiting for sparks to fly from his guitar. I've never seen a band play outside in the rain. Usually there's cover of some sort somewhere. That they use.

Hey Butch,

I was actually expecting the 2 dancers with Prince to bust hard on the wet stage.

Too bad they didn't - would have been great TV!
